Project Profiles
Bio-Remediation:
Baer Engineering responded to a diesel spill by excavating contaminated soil, stockpiling it, and facilitating bioremediation of the contaminants. During delivery to a Yorktown ranch, a diesel supplier overfilled a diesel tank by an unknown (but significant) quantity. The fuel flowed over the ground and impacted nearly 100 cubic yards of soil. The soil was excavated and stockpiled. Rather than sending the soil to a landfill and incurring more costs to our client, Baer Engineering set up a bioremediation cell at the ranch and remediated the soil on site. The stockpile was inoculated with hydrocarbon-eating bacteria, provided with nutrients, watered, and turned on a regular basis. After three months the soil had cleaned up and was spread on the ranch land.
Hazardous Drum Removal:
Baer Engineering mitigated a site where drums of hazardous waste had been dumped on the property. A local landowner was informed by the state environmental agency that abandoned drums of an unknown substance had been found on his property. Baer Engineering responded by sampling the drums and identifying the contents. The liquids had characteristics of a metals process waste and had a pH less than 2.0. The drums, contents, and contaminated soils were removed from the site and disposed of properly. Confirmation samples were taken and the site was closed.
Compliance Evaluation:
As part of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s (TCEQ) EnviroMentor program, Baer Engineering performed a compliance evaluation at a metal finishing operation that was having some issues with the regulatory authorities. A local metal finishing company was having some difficulty coming into compliance with regulations and discharge limits. Baer Engineering conducted a facility evaluation to identify process problems and solutions. We performed an evaluation of the cyanide destruction method and the wastewater pretreatment system and then prepared a report. This report was used by the company to coordinate with the regulatory officials.
Endangered Species and Vegetation Assessments:
Baer Engineering provided an endangered species and vegetation assessment to Geo-Technologies as a part of their evaluation of a cell tower location. We evaluated the site for Houston Toad habitat and documented the nearby occurrence of that species. Baer also conducted a vegetation assessment, complete with photographs, to document the cell tower’s impact to the site.
Leaking Petroleum Storage Tank Remediation:
Baer Engineering is conducting ongoing remediation of gasoline contamination from a leaking petroleum storage tank (LPST) at this site. A large underground gasoline release took place at a gasoline station near Lake Granbury in Granbury, Texas. Baer Engineering conducted several mobile dual-phase extraction events to remove free-phase hydrocarbons and lower the concentrations of gasoline constituents in the subsurface. There was a concern that chemicals from the site could impact Lake Granbury, which is a drinking water source. The proactive contaminant reduction reduced this possibility. Baer Engineering prepared a Plan B Risk Assessment which was accepted by the state environmental agency. The site is currently undergoing monitoring to document natural attenuation and is expected to close in less than one year.
Expedited Underground Storage Tank Removal:
Baer Engineering performed an expedited removal of an underground storage tank at a location owned by Wukasch Properties. In the midst of a large construction project, Wukasch Properties discovered a previously-unknown underground storage tank. Work on the site was suspended until the tank could be removed and the regulatory issues addressed. Baer Engineering was given the project late on a Thursday afternoon. The tank contents were sampled on Friday, the tank was removed on Saturday, the construction site was ready for work again on Monday, and down time charges to the client were kept at a minimum.
